The Chargers began play in 1960 in Los Angeles before moving to San Diego the next season. The team plays its home games at Qualcomm stadium and are the only NFL team based in Southern California.
The early years in the American Football League were good to the Chargers as the team would win the AFL West five times in six years, and would win one AFL Championship over the Patriots 51-10 in 1963. The final years in the AFL and the early years in the NFL after the merger in 1970, would not be as pleasant as the Chargers would miss the post season thirteen years straight. Between 1979 and 1982, the team posted four straight playoff appearances losing twice in divisional playoffs and twice in the Conference Championship game. The Chargers would have another decline, as they would miss the post season for the next nine seasons between 1983 and 1991.
The Chargers would have a run of luck and make the playoffs three of the next four years, this time making it to the Super Bowl in 1994 where they lost to the 49ers 49-26. Just as in the past, the team would have another decline and miss the post season between 1996 and 2003 posting the franchises worst record in 2000 at 1-15. Since 2004, the Chargers have played in the post season five times, making it to the AFC Championship game once, they have failed to make the playoffs the last three years. The team has six players and one coach in the Hall of Fame; among those include Dan Fouts, Kellan Winslow, and Lance Alworth.

In 2011, the San Diego Charges went 8-8 and ended in a three-way tie in the AFC West. However, the Chargers lost the tiebreaker and did not advance to the playoffs. The team will hope to win more games in 2012 and advance to the postseason. Philip Rivers (QB) leads the offense again in 2012. While completing 62.8% of his passes, he threw for 4,624 yards and 27 touchdowns last season. Vincent Jackson (WR), the team's leading receiver, is now with Tampa Bay, but Malcolm Floyd (WR) returns after having 856 yards receiving in 2011. Ryan Matthews (RB) returns to start in the backfield. Matthews ran for 1,091 yards on 222 carries last season. The defense ranked 13th in pass defense and 20th in rush defense last year, and the Chargers hope they can improve in 2012. Takeo Spikes (LB) will be back for another season, and the veteran will need to lead this defense and help stop the run. The Chargers also drafted Melvin Ingram (DE) with their first-round pick in the draft. Ingram had 44 tackles and 2 interceptions for South Carolina in 2011. Overall, if the offense can stay healthy at the running back and receiver positions, then the team will be dangerous. The Chargers will also need better play from their defense.
