Mark Morris Dance Group
The New York based, Mark Morris Dance Group was created in 1980 and dished out its first concert on the same year in New York City. The company did not look back from then on as they made a steady expansion on their touring schedule covering more cities in the United States and Europe several years later. Under the leadership of its Artistic Director Mark Morris and Rehearsal Director Matthew Rose, the company has sustained and fortified its bond with some cities through their bases at Cal Performances in Berkeley, California on the West Coast, and in Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois located in Urbana-Champaign in the Midwest. The company performs recurrently in New York, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, Fairfax, Virginia, and Seattle, Washington. Their first breakthrough is perhaps having their first national television show in which the "Dance in America" was shown on PBS in 1986. They amassed the exposure they need on this national stage. Two years later they became the Belgium national dance company where they made Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels as their residence for the next three years. In 1991, the group returned to the United States with the distinction of being one of the leading dance companies in the world. The company was invited yearly at major festivals held worldwide such as Edinburgh Festival, Mostly Mozart Festival and Tanglewood Music Festival. The company also gained numerous awards, recognitions and accolades for their unparalleled artistic flair, creativity, hilarity, and diverse musicality. The company pocketed two prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards (United Kingdom). During their international tours for the past years the company has teamed up with the world's most talented and popular performing artists like Yo-Yo Ma, Zakir Hussain, Ethan Iverson, Emanuel Ax, Garrick Ohlsson and Yoko Nozaki.
