The Detroit Lions are members of the NFL and play in the North Division of the National Football Conference. The Lions play their home games at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan. Originally named the Portsmouth Spartans, the team was purchased and moved to Detroit in 1934. When you think of the Lions, Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders is usually the first thing to come to mind.
The Lions won their first NFL championship in 1935 beating the Giants 26-7, but it would be a long 16 seasons before they would play in the title game again, during this time the team would post records of 0-11 in 1942 and 1-10 in 1946. The Lions first real period of success would be between 1952 and 1957, the team would play in the NFL championship game four times, all against the Browns, winning three times, 152, 53, and 57 and losing in 1954. In the 33 seasons that followed their 1957 championship the Lions would make the post season only three times and only have ten seasons with more wins than losses.
In the 90’s, the Lions would have their second run of success. Between 1990 and 1999 the Lions would make the post season six times, in 1991 they would lose to the Redskins in the conference finals, but would not make it past the wild card round in the next five showings. Since 2000, the team has made one playoff appearance in 2011 losing to the Saints 45-28. The Lions are the only team to lose all of their games in the pre Super Bowl and Super Bowl eras going 0-11 in 1942 and 0-16 in 2008, becoming the only team in the Super Bowl era to lose all 16 regular season games. The Lions are one of four current teams to have never played in the Super Bowl.

The Detroit Lions had a great season in 2011, advancing to the playoffs with a record of 10-6. The Lions hope that they can continue to improve in 2012. The Lions' offense had success with the passing game last season. Matthew Stafford (QB) threw for 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns. He keeps getting better every year, and the Lions finally have an offensive line that can protect him. Stafford has one of the NFL's top receivers in Calvin Johnson (WR). Johnson had 96 catches for 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. He will likely put up similar numbers again in 2012. The Lions also have a solid defense in place. Ndamukong Suh (DT) and Kyle Vanden Bosch (DE) are excellent on the defensive line. They combined for 12 sacks in 2011. The defensive line also has Nick Fairley (DT) who should continue to progress and help the team. Stephen Tulloch (LB) led the team in tackles last season with 111. The Lions should keep improving this season. It will be difficult to play with the Packers, but if anyone in this division can compete with them, it will be the Lions.
