2011 Arizona Diamondbacks Success
The Arizona Diamonbacks look to continue their recent success as they made the playoffs in 2011, but lost to the Brewers in the National League Division Series. The Diamondbacks won just 65 games in 2010. Then, the new GM Kevin Towers turned the team around in his first year. He looks to continue improving a solid team. Justin Upton (RF) is only 24 years old, but he is in his fifth full season as a starter. Upton batted .289 in 2011 and had 31 homeruns. He will continue to drive in runs and get on base this season. The Diamondbacks acquired Aaron Hill (2B) from the Blue Jays at the end of last season. He batted .315 while in Arizona. They also picked up Jason Kubel (LF) from the Twins in the offseason. Kubel should bat near .300 this year for Arizona. Arizona will have a solid bullpen this year with Brad Zeigler, Craig Breslow, and Bryan Shaw all seeing a lot of innings. Zeigler was acquired last season and had an ERA of 1.74 while with Arizona. Ian Kennedy and Wade Miley will likely be the best in the starting rotation. Kennedy was able to win 21 games in 2011. The Diamondbacks should be competitive in the NL West. If their starting rotation can stay strong, then they will be fighting at the top until the very end.
Quickest Champions in History - The Arizona Diamondbacks Memorable Moments
The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the league in 1998 and they have seen the highest of highs and the lowest of lows already. Most franchises have to go through a few decades at least to get to the World Series, much less win it. The Diamondbacks have been to the top of the mountain already. This expansion team is one of the greatest of all time and they certainly have been a top shelf draw for the area. Here are several great memories that helped to make them what they are today: The 2001 World Series Victory. Needless to say, the Series win against the New York Yankees for the fastest expansion World Series Title would have to be the most memorable moment in franchise history. Game seven of that awesome series was perhaps the greatest game ever played depending on who you ask. Certainly a Arizona fan would agree. With the team losing by one run going into the ninth, the Diamondbacks Luis Gonzalez singles off of superstar reliever Mariano Rivera to drive in the winning run. The Diamondbacks are World Series Champions!Humble Beginnings. In the first game in franchise history, the Diamondbacks would lose to fellow expansion club Colorado by a score of 9-2. The franchise would be much more successful in years to come. A shocking development. The Arizona Diamondbacks were not supposed to be that good. In only the second year of their existence, they won the NL West. No expansion team had ever done that so quickly. Randy Johnson led the way for the pitching staff and helped them to an awesome season. They lost to the Mets in four games but the experience would pay off down the road. Randy mows em down. Randy Johnson was always a strikeout pitcher, but May 8, 2001 was something else. The tall, lanky pitcher struck out 20 batters to tie a Major League record for a regulation game. He was pulled after nine innings with the score tied. Eventually they would win the game but Johnson was not even the winning pitcher. Tell that to the Reds. The 2002 Rockies win another title. The 2002 Diamondbacks once again return to the playoffs with yet another Western Division title. A blowout win over the Rockies to clinch the deal had to sweeten the pot a bit. Randy Finds Perfection. In May of 2004, Randy Johnson once again made a spectacle of himself by throwing a perfect game against the Atlanta Braves. This time he obviously was the winning pitcher of record. 2008-Present. These have been lean years for the Diamondbacks though they did finally return to the playoffs in 2011. Though the Diamondbacks seem to be rebuilding in a manner of speaking, they are a franchise that have much to be proud of. Perhaps in the years to come, we will see them once again in the World Series. With a proud history and plenty of baseball pride, Arizona fans will most certainly be behind them at every turn.
