PNC Park
The Pittsburgh Pirates play all home games at the new PNC Park. The stadium opened in '02 and holds just over 38,000. A small stadium compared to others. The stadium is located at 115 Federal Street in the heart of Pittsburgh and connect to the subway. The fans in Pittsburgh are passionate about all of their teams and even when the team is struggling. The team has been struggling over the last few years but you can expect to see some of the best fans in the majors. The stadium has luxury suites along the first and third base line and it's intimate setting has made the best places to visit in Pittsburgh since the park opened. Get to the stadium this season and enjoy the "Tase of Pittsburgh" concouse area where fans have over 100 eating options.
The Pittsburgh Pirates need to be consistent.
The Pittsburgh Pirates saw glimmer of hope at the start of 2011 season and they hope to keep improving this season. The Pirates began last season 53-47 and were fighting at the top of the division before they went 19-43 in their remaining games to finish a heartbreaking 72-90. The Pirates hope to bounce back in 2012.Andrew McCutchen (CF) signed a long-term deal with the club and will look to continue his success with the team. McCutchen has a career batting average of .281 with the Pirates. He also belted 23 home runs last season. The Pirates have cut ties with Derrek Lee (1B) and Ryan Ludwick (OF), but they have added Rod Barajas (C), Nate McClouth (CF), Erik Bedard (SP), A.J. Burnett (SP), and Casey McGehee (1B). These newcomers add experience to a team full of younger prospects. The addition of A.J. Burnett and Erik Bedard helps the Pirates starting rotation. Burnett won 11 games and had 171 strikeouts with the Yankees last season, while Bedard had an ERA of 3.62 with the Mariners. The rest of the staff is decent, but they will need to step up their game in 2012 if they want to be competitive. Kevin Correia led the team with only 12 wins in 2011. The Pirates may have a bright future, but this season may be more about improving as a team than winning the division.
Five World Championships Ensure Great Moments for Pittsburgh Pirates Fans
Over the long and storied history of the Pittsburgh Pirates, they have accumulated five World Championships and Nine National League Pennants. Given that they are doormats in the National League Central over the last few years, not many people realize the huge success that Pittsburgh has had over their franchise history. The truth is, they have not been very successful at all since that last World Series back in 1979. With some good draft picks of late and a bit of luck, that might change. For now, however, the Pirates fans have some incredible memories of success that few franchises are lucky enough to get: In October of 1909, the Pirates win a thrilling seven game World Series against the Detroit Tigers to take home their first World Title. While the game was not thrilling the Series itself was hotly contested. The Pirates won game seven behind a shutout by Babe Adams and eight runs by the offense. In 1960, the Pirates opened the decade right with a World Series victory over the hated New York Yankees. For the third time in three World Series wins, the Pirates take the series in seven games. This is the Series where Bill Mazeroski drills the home run that ends the World Series. Clearly the Pirates had a flair for the dramatic.Roberto Clemente then leads the Pirates to a fourth World Series in 1971. He wins the MVP of the Series, and once again, they win it in seven games. Clemente then follows that up with his 3000th hit of his career in 1972. Tragically it would be the last hit for Clemente. He was then elected in the Hall of Fame in 1973 after his tragic death early in 72. His election is one of the saddest, yet proudest, moments in the history of baseball. As if on cue, in 1979 the Pirates took on the Baltimore Orioles and won the World Series in seven games. It was their fifth championship and their most dramatic. They rallied after being down 3 games to 1 to come back and win it all again. In 1990 Doug Drabek had a season that many Pittsburgh Pirate pitchers aspire to even now. He won the Cy Young after winning 22 games. This pitching performance is widely recognized as one of the finest in Pittsburgh Pirates history. In 2001, the Pirates finally opened up PNC ballpark. This state of the art park is now considered to be among the finest in baseball and something that every major league fan should see at least once. The old Three Rivers Stadium is certainly missed, but this new park is awesome over a decade later. While many of these memories are fading into baseball history, they are ripe and clear to any Pittsburgh Pirates fan. The days of being proud to be a Pirates fan are not over, but they certainly require you to have a great memory. Perhaps in the years to come the Pirates can start some new winning traditions and build another legacy. One thing is for sure...if they get in the World Series and win it, it will be in seven games.
