2011 LA Dodgers Team
The LA Dodgers struggled somewhat in 2011 as they barely hovered above a .500 record in the NL West. They were only good enough for third place in their division. But with former owner Frank McCourt gone, and a group of owners taking control (led by Magic Johnson), the Dodgers should have a positive future ahead. The Dodgers still have Matt Kemp (CF), one of the top hitters in the game today. Kemp batted .324 with 39 homeruns last season. Andre Ethier (RF) and the 24 year old Dee Gordon (SS) are also still with the team. Ethier batted .292 last season, while Gordon hit .304. Gordon only played 56 games last season, but if he can keep getting hits, Kemp and Ethier will be able to drive in some runs. Clayton Kershaw returns as the ace in the Dodgers pitching rotation. In 2011, Kershaw was brilliant. He struck out 248 batters, won 21 games and had an ERA of 2.22. The Dodgers also added Aaron Harang to the backend of their rotation, which gives them some depth. The LA Dodgers have two of the top players in baseball in Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw. If other players can produce, then the team will be in for a successful season.
The Dodgers History Full of Memories
The Los Angeles Dodgers originally were from Brooklyn, so it set up a natural rivalry with their New York brethren. The years would quickly bring that feud to fruition, but the Dodgers were simply about winning. They started hot and have been one of the best franchises in baseball history over the years. Here is a look at some of their best memories: The 1959 World Series Shocker. In 1959, the Dodgers had only been in Los Angeles for two years. Instead of taking several years to find their winning groove like most teams, the Dodgers went out and defeated the Chicago White Sox for the World Series title. This immediate success made them instant superstars and a popular team among fans across the country. Sandy Mows Em Down. Sandy Koufax was the ultimate Dodger. In dramatic fashion he managed to throw the first perfect game in Dodgers history against the Chicago Cubs in 1965. He also whiffed 14 batters in that game. No pitcher was any better during that era. Game one of the 1988 World Series. Kirk Gibson was injured and was not supposed to even play. Instead, he strolls up to the plate and faces down Dennis Eckersley with the game on the line in the ninth inning. Game one of the World Series was up for grabs. Gibson runs the count full and then hits a walk off home run for the victory. Being sick with a bad virus and hobbling on bad legs, Gibson rounds the bases and jumpstarts that team to an improbable World Series victory in only five games. The Homer Fest. Back in 2006, the Dodgers were not exactly considered to be home run crazy. They had some great hitters to be sure, but nobody saw this coming. In a game against the Padres on September 18, the Dodgers entered the bottom of the ninth losing by four runs. What did they do? They promptly smacked four home runs in a row to tie the game....on four straight pitches. What are the odds of that happening? Then, in the tenth the game is won by, you guessed it--a home run by Nomar Garciaparra. 1981 World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers faced off against the mighty New York Yankees and did not blink. After losing to the Yankees in 77-78, the Dodgers had to be a bit on the intimidated side. In fact, they started off with losing the first two games of the series. That did not slow the Dodgers one bit though. The went on to win the series in six games in what many thought to be a shocker series. The season was one of destiny. Fernando Valenzuela was having a rookie year unlike anything baseball had seen. He threw five shutouts in his first eight games and eight shutouts total for the year. No rookie had ever dominated MLB like that before and he ended up winning the Cy Young award for his efforts.
