Mountaineers Football 2011 Review
The Mountaineers jump to the Big 12 after winning the Big East title in 2011 with a 10-3 record. West Virginia finished the season with a 70-33 rout of Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Quarterback Geno Smith had a great season in 2011. He threw for 4,385 yards a school record. Wide receivers Steadman Bailey and Tavon Austin both gained over 1,000 yards in receiving last season. The defense was average last season and needs to improve if West Virginia is going to win the Big 12 in their inaugural season.
The Mountaineer offense should be potent in 2012 with Geno Smith at the helm. West Virginia returns four seniors with starting experience on the offensive line. The running game should be good enough to keep defenses honest. Defensive improvement is needed West Virginia gave up 26 points a game in 2011. 6 starters return on defense as they go from a 3-3-5 defense to a conventional 3-4. Another ten win season is possible for West Virginia in 2012.
