The team started in the AFL as the Dallas Texans and was relocated to Kansas City in 1963 becoming the Chiefs. The Chiefs were successful during the AFL years, winning three league championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969. The Chiefs were the second team to appear in two Super Bowls, the Packers being the first; they were also the first team to win a championship in two different decades.
After a playoff appearance in 1971, the Chiefs would struggle. Between 1972 and 1989, the Chiefs would only make the playoffs once (a 1986 loss to the Jets) and would have 11 seasons with losing records. In 1988, the Chiefs would hire Marty Shchottheimer and in the 1988 and 1989 drafts, they would acquire Neil Smith and Derrick Thomas, this combination would make the Chiefs playoff contenders. Between 1990 and 1995, the Chiefs would make six straight playoff appearances and one AFC Championship appearance. Even with a strong team, they could not make it to another Super Bowl.
Between 1996 and 2012, the Chiefs would only make the playoffs four times, losing twice in the Divisional playoffs and twice in the Wild-Card playoffs. During this time, the team would also post a record of 4-12 twice and 2-14 twice, the most recent 2-14 record being the 2012 season. The Chiefs, once known as one of the toughest and hardest hitting football teams, have their work cut out for them but maybe with some good draft picks and some luck can begin to move forward again in the future.

The Kansas City Chiefs finished the 2011 season 7-9 and ended up in last place in the AFC West. The good news is that they were only one game behind everyone else in the division, as the other three teams finished 8-8. The Chiefs hope that they can improve in 2012 and win more games. Matt Cassel (QB) will lead the offense in 2012. Cassel was injured last season and only played in 9 games and threw for 1,713 yards. Dwayne Bowe (WR) will be the top target for Cassel in 2012. Bowe had 81 receptions and 1,159 yards receiving in 2011. If Cassel can stay healthy, then the Chiefs offense should be successful this season. The Chiefs' defense had trouble stopping the run in 2011, ranking 26th in the NFL in rushing yard against. Derrick Johnson (LB) led the team in tackles last season will 131. He also had a forced fumble and two interceptions. The Chiefs drafted Dontari Poe (DT) with the 11th overall pick in the draft. They hope that the 346 pound rookie from Memphis can help the team stop the run better in 2012. The Chiefs should have some success in 2012 if they can stay free from injury. The defense will be better this season and will help keep games close.
