Red Sox Putting Faith in Valentine
The Boston Red Sox did not add much to their roster in the offseason. In fact, their biggest addition will not be playing at all. New manager Bobby Valentine hopes to have a positive impact in his first season with the club. Power in the lineup should not be a problem for the Red Sox this year. David Ortiz (DH), Kevin Youkilis (3B), and Adrian Gonzalez should provide plenty of hits and homeruns. Ortiz batted .309 last season and Gonzalez hit .338. Youkilis struggled, batting a career low .258. Look for the Red Sox third-baseman to bounce back in 2012. Jon Lester and Josh Beckett are excellent in the starting rotation. Beckett had an ERA of 2.89 last year. The backend of the rotation may be a little weak to start the season, but the Red Sox hope that they can find some consistency. The bullpen will also need to step up their game after losing Jonathan Papelbon to the Phillies. Overall, the Boston Red Sox hope that their bullpen can hold strong in a division that is full of power hitters. If they can, the Red Sox have some power of their own that they can unleash on their opponents.
The Greatest Moments in the History of the Boston Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox is an old team. They became part of the American League in 1901. Until 1908, the Red Sox were called the Boston Americans. Such a long history is sure to offer plenty of big moments, but many fans agree that these are the tops:
October of 1903 saw Boston winning the very first World Series. The Red Sox beat the Pirates with a score of 3 - 0. Since they were still called the Boston Americans took the series by winning five games to three. In 1903, the Series was best of nine. Bill Dinnneen was the pitcher for the winning game, pulling off a 4 hitter and a complete game.
In October of 1912, the Red Sox took the second World Championship with a win against the New York Giants during the eighth game of the Series. At the top of the 10th, the Giants had a lead by one run; the Sox rallied by scoring two runs for the win.
October of 1915 saw the Red Sox winning a third World Championship. In the winning game of this series, they beat the Philadelphia Phillies with a score of 5 to 4. The series is a win with four games to one. The winning game was pitched by Rube Foster, and Harry Hooper managed to hit two homers, with his second one occurring in the top of the ninth, giving the Sox a lead.
The following October, of 1916, the Red Sox once again won the World Championship, making it their second consecutive and the fourth one in the history of the team. This time they defeat Brooklyn Robins with a score of four to one. The 1916 Series was a win with four games to one win. The winning game was pitched by Ernie Shore for the complete game.
On September 11 of 1918, the Red Sox won a fifth World Championship. It was their third in four years, with a win against the Chicago Cubs two to one. The Series was won four games to two. Carl Mays was the winning pitcher of the deciding game.
September of 1946 was the year that the Boston Red Sox won their very first American League Pennant since 1918. They beat the Cleveland Indians one to zero. Ted Williams hit the only run in the game with a home run that was inside the park.
It wasn't until October of 1967 that the Red Sox had their next amazing moment, when they beat the Minnesota Twins with a score of five to three, allowing them to take the Pennant for the American League. The Sox scored five runs during the 6th inning, and took control. The pitcher for the game was Jim Lonborg.
On October 20 of 2004, the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees with a ten to three win, taking the American League Pennant. The Sox were behind three games to none during the Championship Series, but they came back and won the next four games. This put the Red Sox down in history as the very first team to come back after such a big game win deficit.
October 27 of 2004 saw the Boston Red Sox ending 86 frustrating years with their first World Series win since 1918. The winning game was a sweep against St. Louis Cardinals with a win of three to zero. Johnny Damon starts the game off with a homer and the Sox continue on from there. Derek Lowe was the pitcher for seven strong innings.
In October of 2007, the Sox take their second World Championship in four short years by beating the Colorado Rockies with a score of four to three. They take the Series in just four games. A pinch hit homer is delivered by Bobby Kielty during the eighth inning, allowing the Sox to be up for good.
