Washington Nationals are stacked with young talent.
The Washington Nationals have become one of the hot picks in baseball this season. They have many talented young prospects that want to make some noise in the big leagues this year. The Nationals will be able to go as far as their young stars take them. The player that everyone will be watching this year is Bryce Harper (LF), the 19 year old phenom from Las Vegas. Harper has played extremely well in his short minor league career. But will he be able to make an impact in the big leagues? Harper will have some veterans to rely on like Ryan Zimmerman (3B), Adam LaRoche (1B), and Jason Werth (RF). Zimmerman batted .289 in 2011, while Werth slumped a little last season, only batting .232 with 20 home runs. But if he can stay healthy, he will add some pop to the Nationals lineup. Washington's pitching staff is highlighted by 23 year old Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg has a battery of nasty pitches, including a 100 mph fastball, but he has been injured a lot in his young career. If he can stay healthy, he can be one of the best pitchers in baseball. Also in the rotation is Jordan Zimmerman, who had an ERA of 3.18 in 2011. If the backend of the rotation and the bullpen can hold strong, and if the Nationals stay healthy, then they should be in for a successful season.
Short History Still Memorable for Washington Nationals Fans
The Washington Nationals major league baseball team is one of the most exciting ball clubs around today. In 2012, they have put together a great start with some solid hitting and pitching to make a run at winning the National League East. Interestingly, it would be the first time they even remotely came close to winning the East in their short history. Though this team has only been around as the Nationals since 2005, the franchise itself has been around since 1969. Until 2005 they were the Montreal Expos. Even as the Expos, however, they had only one division title. Since arriving in Washington, the Nationals have had a tough time adjusting. Still, they have found a way to build a winner and build some great memories along the way. Here are some of the more noteworthy memories. (Please note these are only after arriving in Washington). Washington and Virginia Duke it out. When it became clear that the Expos were going to relocate, many cities were in the mix. In addition to Washington, there was Virginia, Monterrey, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Oklahoma City and even Charlotte. All of these places were good choices, but the battle quickly narrowed down to Virginia and Washington. At this point, Washington began to get excited about the potential of bringing baseball back to this storied area. The Nationals get their Expos. On September 29 of 2004, it became official that the Expos would move to Washington, D.C. Starting in 2005, the Expos would move from Montreal after 35 years of playing. Though some legal wrangling ensued, the move was easily passed by the owners with Baltimore being the lone dissenting vote. An interesting first year. That first season was clearly an exciting one and the Nationals were a pretty decent team. They won 81 games to end at .500 for that first season, but would not see that many wins again. In 2011 they had 80 wins and they look good to get that many in 2012 or more, but the playoffs have never really been on the menu prior to 2012. Still, finishing at .500 your first year is pretty impressive and something that Nationals fans surely appreciated. Zimmerman's Blast. June 18, 2006 was a great day for Nationals fans. The mighty Yankees were in town and the Nationals had managed to keep them in check for most of the day. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, youngster Ryan Zimmerman hit a massive blast into the seats for the win. This victory was one of the biggest in Nationals history if only for the majestic nature of the home run and the symbolism of a better future to come. The home run was epic to say the least. Stephen Strasburg Debut Season. To say Stephen Strasburg is popular is perhaps the understatement of the century. This kid is capable of huge things and will one day be counted among the all time greats if he can stay healthy. The bottom line is Strasburg made Washington Nationals baseball relevant. Today, he is one of many young superstars lifting them slowly to the top of the National League East. Is a World Series in their future?
