2011 San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants struggled with their bats in 2011. They plan to fix that this season, as Buster Posey (C) returns to the team after being injured for most of last year. The 25 year old Posey hit .305 in 2010 and was the best young catcher in baseball. If he can return to form after being injured for most of 2011, then the Giants will have a chance to make a playoff run. The Giants added Angel Pagan (CF) and Melky Cabrera (LF), and they still have their slugger Pablo Sandoval (3B). In 2011, Cabrera batted .305 and Sandoval hit .315. The Giants should be able to score more runs than they did last year. The Giant's pitching staff will be strong again in 2012. Aces Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain will likely be dominant. Lincecum and Cain combined for almost 400 strikeouts in 2011. Barry Zito and Madison Bumgarner will help make the Giants pitching rotation one of the best in the National League. The Giants will be able to win tight games with their pitching in 2012. If they can keep their pitchers and their young catcher healthy, they should contend for a playoff spot.
World Series Coming Soon - San Francisco Giants Greatest Memories
The San Francisco Giants franchise dates back so far that it might seem as though George Washington might have suited up for them. This franchise has been around the block. For the purposes of this article, we are only dealing with memories since the team arrived in San Francisco and started playing at Seals Stadium in 1958. All memories noted are from after that point. This is not meant to be a comprehensive list, but a list of favorites as noted by Giants fans. The first game at Seals Stadium. Way back in 1958 the Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in a shutout at Seals Stadium for their first game in the stadium. The game was indicative of the Giants future successes. A pennant over the Dodgers as well. In 1962 the Giants were lucky enough to defeat the Dodgers again but this time it was in a three game playoff for the National League pennant. Don Larsen pitched them to victory in the last game of the series to give the pennant to the Giants.A great no-no by PerryIn 1968, Gaylord Perry and Bob Gibson had a September game to remember. Perry ended up with the win and nine strikeouts after throwing a no-hitter while Gibson lost despite holding the powerful Giants to only one run. This game is widely regarded as one of the best pitched games in history. Juan Maricial leads Giants to West Title. In a final game of the season decision over the San Diego Padres, Juan Maricial and the Giants wrapped up their first National League West title back in September of 1971. The game was one of Maricial's finest clutch wins as he went the entire distance. Back to the World Series. In 1989, the Giants were on quite the World Series slow streak. They had not been to one since they won the pennant back in 1962. The Giants ran through the Chicago Cubs to get to the Series by a tally of four games to one. They eventually would lose to the mighty Oakland Athletics in a Series that was largely known for the earthquake that struck in the middle of a game. Barry Breaks the Record. Barry Bonds, beloved throughout San Francisco if nowhere else, breaks the single season home run mark by hitting his 71st home run on October 5. He would tack on another two home runs for a final tally of 73 that has yet to be broken. Another World Series Loss. The Giants might have lost the World Series in 2002 to the Anaheim Angels, but making it there against the St. Louis Cardinals sure was fun. The NLCS was very satisfying and showed that good things were coming for the Giants. No team was scrappier than this one. Barry Bonds Part Two. On August 7 of 2007, Bonds broke the hallowed mark by hitting home run number 756. He became the all-time leader in home runs for a career and not many people were overly happy about it. Steroid allegations would put a major damper on the achievement. 2010 World Series. This World Series was vital for a number of reasons. First of all, it was the first one since the Giants won the World Series in 1954. It also was the first World Series won in San Francisco since the move. Tim Lincecum was dynamic and dominant throughout the playoffs and the Giants were World Series Champions!
