The Raiders of old are considered one of the hardest hitting and roughest teams that played in the AFL and the NFL. The first seven years in the AFL was an up and down ride, but in 1967 the Raiders would begin a long and successful stint in the AFL and continue in the NFL after the 1970 merger. In their last three seasons in the AFL, the Raiders would make it to the Super Bowl in 1967 losing to the Packers 33-14 and would lose in the AFL Championship game the next two seasons.
With the merger in 1970, the Raiders were already hot, only losing four games in the last three seasons. In their first eight seasons in the NFL, the Raiders would make the playoffs seven times and with the exception of a divisional playoff loss to the Steelers in 1972, they would appear in the AFC Championship game each year. The Raiders would lose their championship games until the 1976 season where they would go on to beat the Vikings in Super Bowl XI 32-14. In 1980, the Raiders would again make it to the Super Bowl, this time beating the Eagles 27-10 for their second Super Bowl title.
In 1982, the Oakland Raiders relocated to Los Angeles and became the Los Angeles Raiders; the name change did not affect the play and the team. Over the next 13 seasons, the team would make the playoffs seven times and win their third Super Bowl, beating the Redskins 38-9 in 1983. In 1985, the Raiders moved back to Oakland, they would miss the playoffs five straight years before a run of three straight showings culminating in a Super Bowl XXXVII loss to the Buccaneers 48-21. The team has struggled ever since not making it to any post-season games and with the exception of two 8-8 seasons have not won more than five games in any of the last ten seasons.

Last season, the Oakland Raiders had many bumps in the road. One major bump occurred when their starting quarterback, Jason Campbell, was injured and the team had to trade for Carson Palmer (QB) midseason. Despite all of their setbacks, the Raiders finished 8-8 and barely missed a chance to make the playoffs. They have a solid team and they hope they can make the postseason in 2012. Carson Palmer did not play in his first game of the season until the end of October against the Chiefs. While he may have been less than stellar, Palmer was able to help the Raiders win three straight games against the Chargers, Vikings, and Bears. With a full offseason to prepare, Palmer should be much better in 2012. Darren McFadden (RB) has been injured often in his young career. He really only played 6 games last year, but he averaged 102 yards in those games. If he can stay healthy, the Raiders should have an exciting offense. The Raiders' defense struggled in 2011, ranking 27th in both pass defense and run defense. But they have a new coach and a new system this season. Tyson Branch (S) led the team in tackles and the 25-year-old hopes to help turn around his defense. The Raiders should have a solid offense this season as long as they can stay healthy. If the defense can play better, then the Raiders will be fighting at the top of the AFC West in 2012.
