Memphis - The Musical

Memphis is a wonderful musical whipped up by the tandem of David Bryan (music/lyrics) and Joe DiPietro (lyric/ book). The musical is somewhat anchored in the story of a Memphis disc jockey named Dewey Phillips, who happens to be one of the first white Disc Jockeys to perform black music in circa 1950s. The musical was unveiled during the 2003-2004 season at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts and at TheatreWorks in Mountain View, California. It was unleashed on Broadway last October 19, 2009. The Broadway production collared the elusive Tony Award for Best Musical, aside from the three 2010 Tony Awards it received. It also captured the Best Musical in the Live Theatre division at the Golden Icon Awards. To date, Memphis whose main venue is at Shubert Theatre already piled up more than 1,000 performances on Broadway.  It is consisted of two acts and it highlights musical numbers such as the "Underground," "The Music of My Soul," "Scratch My Itch," "Ain't Nothin But a Kiss," "Everybody Wants to Be Black on a Saturday Night," "Make Me Stronger," " Colored Woman," "Memphis Lives in Me," "Tear the House Down," "Steal Your Rock 'n' Roll" and many more. Memphis' first ever national tour started at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee last October and is running nationwide now. Bryan Fenkart played the role Huey Calhoun, and Felicia Boswell played the other main role in the musical which is Felicia Farrell.
