Wisconsin finished first in the Big Ten's Leaders Division, with a 6-2 record in conference play. Highlights of the 2011 campaign included a blowout win against then #8 Nebraska and impressive late-season victories against then #19 Penn State and then #17 Michigan State. Among the key returning players for the Badgers are quarterback Joe Brennan, running back Montee Ball, running back James White, wide receiver/kick returner Jared Abbrederis, kicker Kyle French, linebacker Mike Taylor, linebacker Chris Borland, and defensive back Shelton Johnson. Wisconsin has several quality recruits joining the team this coming season, including linebacker Vince Biegel (Wisconsin), quarterback Bart Houston (California), offensive tackle Dan Voltz (Illinois), safety D.J. Singleton (New Jersey) and running back Vonte Jackson (Wisconsin). The 2012 Wisconsin schedule features a number of great matchups, among them are the Big Ten season opener at Nebraska, an October 27 date with Michigan State and tough games to close the regular season against Ohio State and Penn State. The Bagers Lost Some Close Games IN 2011
So close but so far away, change a couple of plays and the Badgers would have been undefeated in the regular season. The Badgers lost to Ohio State and Michigan State on miracle plays and Wisconsin lost to Oregon In the Rose Bowl by 7. Quarterback Russell Wilson made the difference for the Badgers. He gave them a legitimate run and pass threat. He completed 72 percent of his passes for 3175 yards and 33 touchdowns. When you combined him with the powerful Wisconsin running game, they were unstoppable. Backs Montee Ball and James White carved up opposing defenses. Ball rushed for 1,923 yards and 33 touchdowns. White 713 yards and six scores. The defense for the most part was solid but they gave up too many big plays against the better teams on their schedule.
Replacing Wilson will be the key for the Badgers. He added a run pass combination that added another element to the Wisconsin attack. Also replacing offense lineman Peter Konz at center and guard Kevin Zeitler will be important. Returning backs Ball and White might be the best one-two punch in the country. Linebacker Chris Borland is one of the best linebackers in the country he will lead the defense. Receivers Jared Abbrederis and Jason Peterson are solid targets. There are elements there for the Badgers to make some more noise in 2012. A quarterback must be found and the defense losing 5 starters must be shored up.
