Washington State finished in last place in the Pac-12's North Division, with an 2-7 conference record. Highlights of the 2011 campaign included non-conference victories over Idaho State and UNLV, and Pac-12 wins against Colorado in October and Arizona State in November. Among the key returning players for the Cougars are quarterback Connor Halliday, running back Rickey Galvin, running back Carl Winston, wide receiver Bobby Ratliff, kicker Andrew Furney, safety Deone Bucannon, safety Tyree Toomer and safety Casey Locker. Washington State has several quality recruits joining the team this coming season, including running back Robert Lewis (California), wide receiver Alex Jackson (California), wide receiver Gabriel Marks (California), linebacker Jeremiah Allison (California) and linebacker Khalil Pettway (California). The 2012 Washington State schedule features a number of great matchups, among them are the season-opener at Brigham Young on August 30, a battle with Oregon on September 29, and late-season games against UCLA and rival Washington. Washington State 2012 Preview

Former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is the new coach for the Cougars. He will bring a wide open offense and a confident attitude to the Washington State program. The Cougars finished 4-8 overall and last in the PAC-12 North. The strength of the 2011 team was the ability to pass the ball. Quarterback Jeff Tuel has starting experience and top receiver Marquess Wilson returns after catching 82 passes for 1,388 yards. Running the ball was a problem. Washington State could only muster 3 yards per carry. The defense gave up 422 yards a game.
Leach will find a way for the Cougars to score and the running game will improve because of the type of offense he uses. Tuel has the ability to run the offense and some good receivers return. The defense will be a problem. Washington State will have to outscore their opponents to have a successful season. The Cougars have not had a winning season since 2003 and will have to wait another season because 5 wins is the best Washington State can expect.
