The Houston Rockets are Southwest Division members of the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Rockets first joined the NBA in 1967 and were located in San Diego, California where they remained for four years. In 1971, the Rockets relocated to Houston, Texas and currently play all their home games at the Toyota Center.

The inaugural season for the Rockets’ started with winning a dismal 15 games. In 1969, with the drafting of Elvin Hayes, the Rockets made their first appearance in the playoffs. Moses Malone later was acquired to replace Hayes after he was traded. Malone was a critical player who won the MVP award twice and let the Rockets to the conference finals his first year with the team. In 1981, the Rockets, led by Malone, went to the NBA Finals where they were defeated by Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics in six games. In 1986, the “Twin Towers,” Hakeem Olajuwon and Ralph Sampson led the team to the finals where they were defeated yet again, by the Boston Celtics. The following 7 seasons  they lost in the first round of the playoffs five times until advancing to the finals in 1993. This time, they lost in overtime of Game 7 to the Seattle SuperSonics.

In their history, the Houston Rockets have won four Division titles (1977, 1986, 1993, and 1994), won four Conference Titles (1981, 1986, 1994, and 1995), and won two NBA Championships in 1994 and 1995.

Toyota Center

The Toyota Center opened in 2003 covering the span of six city blocks in the city of Houston, Texas. Although the arena is home to the NBA’s Houston Rockets and the AHL’s Houston Aeros, the facility also hosts a variety of other events including some of the nation’s top concerts and touring shows.

Seating capacity at the Toyota Center differs for whatever event is taking place at the time. The capacity ranges from 17,800 for hockey, to 18,300 for basketball and upwards of 19,000 for concerts and other events. The arena also boasts 2,900 club seats and 103 luxury suites. The first event ever held at the arena was a Fleetwood Mac concert on October 6, 2003 and the first Houston Rockets game took place against the Denver Nuggets on October 30, 2003. Parking for events at the Toyota Center is easier thanks to the 2,500-space Toyota Tundra garage connected via private skybridge, and the 10,000 spaces available within blocks of the arena. The arena also has the Lexus Lounge, Woodforest Club, Jack Daniel’s Bar and the Red and White Bistro for food and beverages while enjoying various sporting events.

When the Toyota Center isn’t hosting Rockets Basketball games other events enjoy their time in the arena. Some of these events have included numerous concerts including Guns N’ Roses, Coldplay, Bon Jovi, Alanis Morissette, Nickelback, and the sold out performance by Metallica on November 20, 2008. Additionally, the WWE’s No Mercy (2005), and Vengeance: Night of Champions (2007) were held at the Toyota Center. The Toyota Center is an arena built to make all events, sporting to concerts, a memorable event.
