The Los Angeles Kings first made their home in Los Angeles, in 1966, when the National Hockey League awarded Jack Kent Cooke with the new franchise. With this award, the Kings became one of the six expansion teams that changed the “Original Six” NHL teams to that of 12 different franchises. Throughout the franchises career they have been to the post season 24 times, and made it to the second round of playoffs 12 times and the third round only twice. It wasn’t until the 1992- 93 season that the Kings made their first appearance in the finals losing to the Montreal Canadiens in five games.

During the franchise’s history, they have been home to some tremendous players in the NHL. In the 70’s and 80’s the Kings acquired Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, and Charlie Simmer, a trio of players known as the “Triple Crown Line” for their scoring records on the ice. On June 11, 2012, the Los Angeles Kings became the first team to win the Stanley Cup on home ice since 2007, when they beat the New Jersey Devils in game 6-1 in game six at Staples Center.

Staples Center

Since the Staples Centered opened its doors in October of 1999, it has been home to not only four different professional sports franchises, but also a variety of entertainment events. Although the Staples Center is home to the Championship Lakers (NBA), Sparks (WNBA), and the Kings (NHL), its inaugural event was a concert featuring Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.  Other notable events hosted at the arena include the Grammy Awards, WrestleMania 21, and the 2012 MTV Music awards, along with a variety of concerts from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, to John Mayer. For the first time in 2012, the Staples Center was host to the Stanley Cup Finals between the New Jersey Devils and the LA Kings. Annually, the Staples Center welcomes nearly 4 million guests thru its doors to enjoy the over 250 events hosted.

Seating capacity at the Staples Center ranges from 16,096 to 21,000 dependent upon the event hosted at the time. Boxing/Wrestling events and concerts offer the largest seating capacity at 21,000. The average seating capacity for a professional NBA game is approximately 19,060.  During its history, the Staples Center has modified the lighting system to focus on the court itself for basketball games (2006 – 2007); in 2010, a new high definition center hung scoreboard was installed along with other modifications to the arena and locker rooms.
