The Denver Nuggets play in the National Basketball Association (NBA), and are members of the Northwest Division in the Western Conference.  The Nuggets joined the NBA in 1976. Previously known as the Denver Rockets while playing in the American Basketball Association, they changed the team’s name to the Denver Nuggets prior to officially entering the NBA.

Coming off a strong finish in the ABA, the Nuggets carried the momentum over to the NBA, making the playoffs the first two years and narrowly missing the playoffs in the third year.  Doug Moe took over the coaching duties in 1981 and brought a more offense than defense style mindset to the team, which resulted in scoring over 100 points in 136 consecutive games, an NBA record that has yet to be broken. The Nuggets made 18 straight playoff appearances in the 1970s and 1980s, but were never able to reach the finals despite their high scoring offence.

Doug Moe left the team in 1990 and Paul Westhead took the reins, also believing in a high scoring offense, Westhead seemed to rely less on defense and that would be the team’s downfall for the next couple of years. Even with the team’s ability to produce points, the lack of defense allowed opposing teams to score at ease and the Nuggets offense just could not keep pace. The next two seasons would see the Nuggets finish with losing records and missing the playoffs

The following seasons showed some improvement as the Nuggets made the playoffs, but with the exception of being the first eighth seeded team to beat a number one seeded team, the playoffs ended the same. In 2003, the Nuggets chose Carmelo Anthony with the third overall pick and in the 2005-2006 won a division title for the first time in 18 years, but as luck would have it, the Nuggets lost to the LA Clippers in the first round.

With the addition of talented players over the years, the Nuggets are still chasing that dream of an NBA title and if they can find that one missing piece, they may be able to achieve their goal sooner than later.

PEPSI CENTER

The Pepsi Center is located in Denver, Colorado and is home to the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). The arena opened October 1, 1999 and seats 19,155 for NBA games AND 18,007 for NHL games, it can hold up to 21,000 patrons for concerts and special events.

 In July 2005 and 2006, the arena hosted the newly founded Dew Action Sports Tour, it has also hosted the NHL All Star game and the Stanley Cup Finals. The Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament was held at the Pepsi Center in 2004, 2008, and 2011. The arena has been host to many wrestling events as well as the 2008 Democratic Convention. Additionally, the arena was used during the filming of Blades of Glory in 2007.

Some unique facts about the Pepsi Center include the following: there are 149 panes of half inch thick glass that surround the ice rink, and it takes eight people approximately forty five minutes to hang the entire rink. The basketball court consists of 233 pieces, and once assembled the floor weighs 41,625 pounds. The arena hosts over 200 events each year, including sporting events, concerts, and family shows.
