The Colorado Avalanche plays in the National Hockey League (NHL) and is a member of the Northwest Division in the Western Conference. Founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques, they would become a part of the NHL in the 1979 merger between the World Hockey Association and the NHL.
At the end of the 1994-95 season the Nordiques were sold to a company in Denver and renamed the Avalanche. The first season in Denver the team won the Pacific Division title and then swept the Florida Panthers to win the Stanley Cup, becoming only one of two teams to do so after relocating. The Avalanche went on to win a second Stanley Cup title in 2001 beating the New Jersey Devils, the team that preceded them in Denver, four games to three. Since moving to Denver, the Avalanche have won eight division titles and made the playoffs ten consecutive times, with the streak ending in 2007.
The 2008-2009 season saw the Avalanche post the lowest number of points since Quebec and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. Since 2009 the Avalanche have been quietly rebuilding their team with young talent, striving to return to their previous days of glory.
Only three Avalanche players have made it to the Hall of Fame. Ray Bourque, who demanded a trade to the Avalanche so that he may have a shot at winning a title before he retired, got just that as the Avalanche won in his final year. Patrick Roy, one of the best goaltenders ever won two Stanley Cups in Denver and Jeri Kurri, who played one season with the Avalanche.


PEPSI CENTER
The Pepsi Center is located in Denver, Colorado and is home to the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League (NHL). The arena opened October 1, 1999 and seats 19,155 for NBA games AND 18,007 for NHL games, it can hold up to 21,000 patrons for concerts and special events.
 In July 2005 and 2006, the arena hosted the newly founded Dew Action Sports Tour, it has also hosted the NHL All Star game and the Stanley Cup Finals. The Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament was held at the Pepsi Center in 2004, 2008, and 2011. The arena has been host to many wrestling events as well as the 2008 Democratic Convention. Additionally, the arena was used during the filming of Blades of Glory in 2007.
Some unique facts about the Pepsi Center include the following: there are 149 panes of half inch thick glass that surround the ice rink, and it takes eight people approximately forty five minutes to hang the entire rink. The basketball court consists of 233 pieces, and once assembled the floor weighs 41,625 pounds. The arena hosts over 200 events each year, including sporting events, concerts, and family shows.
