The New Orleans Hornets were founded in 1988 where they began their franchise career as the Charlotte Hornets in the North Carolina city of the same name. After 14 years, the Hornets relocated to New Orleans. With the exception of a two-season stay in Oklahoma City, a move forced upon them by the effects of Hurricane Katrina, the Hornets have called New Orleans home. Today, the Hornets are members of the Southwest Division of the Western Conference and play their home games at the New Orleans Arena.

The Hornets started their franchise career not as successful as is common for expansion teams. With the addition of Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning, the team made it to the playoffs in their fifth year. Despite filling their roster with several veteran players, the Hornets struggled through the years at Charlotte. In the 24 seasons the Hornets have been in existence, they have made it to the post-season twelve times. In 2008, they clinched the Western Division Title. Some of the most notable players in the history of the New Orleans Hornets include, Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning, Glen Rice, Kelly Tripucka, Dell Curry, and Muggsy Bogues. With the Hornets under new ownership, they could be on the road to more prolific seasons in the future.

New Orleans Arena

Located in the central business district of New Orleans, Louisiana and adjacent to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome sits the New Orleans Arena. The Arena opened in 1999 and became home to the New Orleans Hornets professional basketball team. The Arena seating capacity is 18,000 with the ability to increase to 19,000 when in concert configuration.

Some of the design features of the New Orleans Arena features an LED center hung video and scoring system that consists of two ring displays and eight video displays along with scoreboards. The Arena also has an exterior arena LED board for commercials, messages, and graphics. There is also an in-house sound system, and a metal halide lighting system with blackout capability. The Arena also offers a variety of concession stands, luxury suites, and club seats.

In addition to Hornets Basketball, the Arena has also hosted a variety of other events. In 2007, it hosted the ArenaBowl XXI, in 2008 the ArenaBowl XXII. The 2008 NBA All-Star Game and the 2007 and 2010 NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament were hosted at the Arena.  Along with a long list of additional sporting events, there have been numerous concerts at the New Orleans Arena. Some of the entertainers who have performed at the Arena include ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Shania Twain, Billy Joel, Korn, Kiss, Pearl Jam, Santana, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, and Metallica. The New Orleans Arena has proven to be a great arena that offers a great experience regardless of the event in attendance.
