The Brooklyn Nets are part of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference of the NBA and call Brooklyn, New York home. Founded in 1967, as the New Jersey Americans, they were an original member of the American Basketball Association (ABA). The team name changed to the New York Nets after moving to Long Island, where the team won two ABA titles. With the merging of the ABA and the National Basketball Association (NBA), the team moved back to New Jersey and became the New Jersey Nets in 1977. The Nets had many difficulties, mixed with moments of success, during the thirty-five years they played in New Jersey. They made appearances in the NBA Finals in the 2001-2002 and the 2002-2003 seasons.

The past years have been rough ones for the Nets, with coaching changes, injuries, playing in different arenas and the constant talk of trades, focus seems to have been hard to find. Starting the 2009-2010 season off with a record 18 straight losses and a final record of 12-70, making them only the fifth team to lose 70 games in a season, did not help team moral. With the New York Nets finding a new solid home at the Barclay Center, there is hope they can get back to basketball and make a new name for themselves.

BARCLAY CENTER

The Barclay Center became home to the Brooklyn Nets NBA team on September 21, 2012. The arena seats 14,500 fans for hockey and 17,734 for basketball. In 2015, the NHL’s New York Islanders will also be calling the Barclay Center home.  

Originally slated to open in 2006, a series of lawsuits and a lack of funds delayed the project for numerous years, delaying the groundbreaking until March 11, 2010. The arena is designed with a 38,000 plus square foot entrance that features a transit connection structure, which connects to nine subways lines. Not only is this plaza beneficial to subway commuters coming to attend sports and other events, it is the focal point of the arena.

In the few short months since the Barclay Center opened it has hosted numerous events, including the eight sold out shows by Jay-Z, which commemorated the arena’s opening.  Other artists such as Barbra Streisand, Justin Bieber, the Who, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan have played at the Barclay Center. The first basketball game at the Barclay Center was a preseason game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Washington Wizards; the first regular season game was November 3, 2012 with the Nets beating the Toronto Raptors 107-100. Other future events at the Barclay Center will be the Atlantic 10 men’s basketball tournament beginning in 2013; it will also host a WWE Tables Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view event, December 16, 2012. The Barclay Center is quickly establishing itself as a key venue not only for sporting events, but also for entertainers and singers.
