The Tampa Bay Rays first called Tropicana Field home in their 1998 inaugural season. Prior to that, it was called Florida Suncoast Dome then the Thunderdome. Today, Tropicana Field, which has a seating capacity from 34,078 to 42,735 seats, is the only fixed dome stadium remaining in Major League Baseball. The Rays ballpark is the only one in Major League baseball that features artificial turf and an all-dirt base for the paths. Another unique feature at Tropicana Field is the cownose rays tank that opened in 2006. Visitors cannot only enjoy baseball but also have the opportunity to touch and fee living rays that inhabit the tank.

Tropicana Field is a ballpark that is not only outfitted for the multiple sporting events hosted but also it is extremely family friendly. There is a picnic area behind the Rays’ bullpen, the Papa John’s Bullpen Box, various restaurants, a working carnival, and a number of other interactive areas for kids of all ages located on each of the Streets in the park. The Field’s Rotunda was designed using the 1913 blueprints for the Ebbets Field rotunda. Entrance into the rotunda is done by walking on a 900-foot ceramic mosaic walkway, the largest of its kind in Florida.

Tropicana Field is the only stadium in history built for one sport, baseball, but has hosted 16 other sports and competitions. The Stadium’s history includes hosting full seasons of professional baseball, football, hockey, and arena football. The Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl, a college football bowl game sanctioned by the NCAA, is also hosted at Tropicana Field. During a 2008 game between the Rays and the New York Yankees, Tropicana Field was home to the first official use of instant replay in Major League Baseball history.
