The team relatively speaking, is a new franchise. The team burst on the scene March 31, 1998 when the Rays lost their first game to the Detroit Tigers 11-6. Since that time the team has gone from relative obscurity to contenders, winning their first pennant in the 2008 season, the same season they dropped the name devil from the team name. The Ray's have excellent pitching for the 12' season and they are bringing back Burke Badenhop, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, Jake McGee, Matt Moore, Joel Peralta, David Price, Cesar Ramos, Fernando Rodney and fast ball pitcher James Shields. Tampa Bay's first regular season Major League game may have been a loss but since then the team have provided the fans with some great moments. The 2012 season is sure to continue that tradition. Come out a see a game today and cheer on the Rays to a victory. |

Tropicana Field
Tropicana Field play host to the Tampa Bays Rays home games. The field is a domed stadium and one of the few that are left and the only one that is in Florida. Tropicana field initially had Astro turf as the field substance but later changed that in the 2000 season because of injuries. The field is now all grass and some amazing features include luxury seats, a field level party deck and a 10,000 gallon tank in center field that and over 100 cow nose rays fish where fans can see and touch them while listening to a 20 minute synopsis about the creatures. It is an excellent place for children who may get restless during a 3 plus hour ball game.
The Rays Looking to Bring Home The Pennant
After finishing second place in the AL East on year ago, the Tampa Bay Rays are hoping that their top-notch pitching can carry them to the top of the division in 2012. If the Rays batters can put the ball in play, then the team should be able to make a playoff run. Evan Longoria (3B) had a rough season in 2011, only batting a meager .244. Longoria was able to hit 31 homeruns, but he will likely have a higher average this year. Carlos Pena (1B) returns to the club after spending a year with the Cubs. Pena will be able to provide some more power to the Rays lineup. Also, Matt Joyce (LF) continues to improve every year and he batted .277 for the Rays in 2011. Pitching will be the Rays' strong point this season. James Shields and David Price are a terrific one-two punch in the starting rotation. The two pitchers combined for 443 strikeouts in 2011. They will be able to put up similar numbers this year. Also, the 25 year old Jeremy Hellickson has improved in both of his two seasons in the majors. The Rays will have dominant pitching again in 2012. The hope that their lineup will have enough power to score some runs in a tough division. Tampa Bay should be fighting at the top of the AL East until the very end.
Top Memorable Moments for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Not all of the best memorable moments for all baseball teams are based off of exciting events and this might be said by some of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. They've been around for a while, though, and their longevity has allowed for more than one memorable moment. It also allows for more than a couple of loyal fans.
In 1995, the Devil Rays first sign a lease to the Tropicana Field and then just 24 hours later, try to get out of the lease that they just signed.
In 1998, the Devil Rays play their first game with Hall of Fame baseball players Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Monte Irvin and Al Lopez sitting in the stands. The Devil Rays lose the game 11-6. In April of the same year, the Devil Rays win against the Angels; the win boosts them to 10-6, and the best expansion team start on the books.
In 1999, Wade Boggs, hits a home run for the 3,000 hit of his career. There was much celebration, but the Tampa Bay Devil Rays still lost with a final score of 15-10. September of the same years has the Devil Rays taking a wallop from the Texas Rangers. Still, the game had high points, such as when Jim Morris, the 35 year old high school coach and teacher, strikes Royce Clayton out. The story of Jim Morris has since been turned into The Rookie.
In October of 2002, Lou Pinella is signed as the Devil Rays manager.
2003 Started with Carl Crawford hitting a three run home run off the reliever for the Red Sox, Chad Fox. It was Pinella's season opener. Pedro Martinez pitched the game beautifully, and went on to pitch against the Yankees that same year.
In 2004, The Devil Rays win in Tokyo Dome against the Yankees for a score of 8-3. There were 51,000 fans at the game. May and June of the same year sees the Devil Rays winning 30 of 40 games, with 12 of those wins consecutively. The team finishes 2004 70-91, which makes this record the best in the history of the Devil Rays.
July of 2004 sees the pitcher Victor Zambrano traded to the Mets, but gains the pitcher Scott Kazmir for the Devil Rays, which many fans see as a major boost for the team.
While some will argue that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays aren't the best team out there, there are many die-hard fans that stay true year after year, and for many, the loyalty is what makes it all worth it.
