Great Moments in St. Louis Cardinals History1985 - Few will forget the magic of the 1985 NLCS against the Dodgers. In Game 5, with the series and game tied at 2-2, spray-hitting Ozzie Smith stepped up to the plate in the ninth inning and smacked a solo homer off bullpen ace Tom Niedenfuer. The Cardinals went on to face the Kansas City Royals for the World Series crown but lost in the 7th and final game. |

The St. Louis Cardinals are finding ways to win.
After winning their second World Series since 2006, the Cardinals will attempt to defend their title. The team's manager, Tony La Russa is gone and so is the dangerous first baseman Albert Pujols. Nevertheless, the St. Louis Cardinals should have enough firepower to battle at the top of the NL Central. The Cardinals added Carlos Beltran (RF) to their roster. The veteran outfielder has played 16 seasons and has a career batting average of .283. Matt Holiday (LF) and Lance Berkman (1B) also return to a lineup that will still be dangerous with their bats in 2012. Holiday batted .296 in 2011, while Berkman hit .301 with 31 home runs. It will be interesting to see how many runs the Cardinals can score without Albert Pujols. St. Louis also has a very strong pitching staff, led by Adam Wainwright who is fresh off of Tommy John surgery. Kyle Lohse and Jaime Garcia help give the Cardinals one of the most threatening rotations in all of baseball. Jason Motte, with his 100 mph fastball, will be the go-to man in the bullpen. The Cardinals still look strong in 2012 and should be battling at the top of the division. Perhaps they will even make another World Series run.
Gibson, Slaughter Provided Great Moments in St. Louis Cardinals History
The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the most storied franchises in all of Major League Baseball. Among baseball franchises, they stand only behind the legendary New York Yankees in statistics and popularity world wide. The Cardinals are also known for some pretty heavyweight moments over the years. Here are five of the best:
The Slaughter Dash for Home
Enos Slaughter was a great player but one play defined his career. During the 1946 World Series, the Cardinals and Red Sox were locked up at three runs apiece in the eighth. With two outs, Slaughter turned a hit and run base hit by Harry Walker into the potential winning run on a crazy mad dash for home plate. The play is iconic in St. Louis Cardinals history and earned him a statue outside the stadium to this day.
Bob Gibson fans 17 World Series Batters
There is no way that Bob Gibson expected to come in and fan the Detroit Lions lineup all day long, but that he did in Game one of the 1968 series. 17 batters were fanned by Gibson that day and his Game One win was legendary from that day forward.
Lou Brock becomes all time stolen base King
The great Maury Wills had the record for stolen bases in a single season at 104. It was demolished by the great Lou Brock back in 1974 when he went off for 118 steals, beating the record of 104 that Wills had set. Brock would be passed later on by Rickey Henderson but the record breaking day was one that Cardinal fans will never forget.
Hometown Hero Freese Hits Walk Off Series Home Run
In 2011, David Freese got to enjoy every child's dream. He got to not only tie game six in the ninth inning with a two-out, two run triple, but he also got to win it with a game clinching walk off home run in the eleventh inning. The youngster was named NLCS and World Series MVP for his efforts and it catapulted St. Louis to yet another world championship.
Mark McGwire blasts number 62
No matter who you are or where you were during the 1998 St. Louis Cardinals season, you had to know that something special was going on. Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. put on a show that was unlike anything in baseball history. They were hitting long balls at a record pace, and quickly approaching Roger Maris longtime record of 61 home runs in a single season. Griffey Jr fell off the pace and eventually it was down to Sosa and McGwire. During a September series against Sosa's Chicago Cubs, the great McGwire slapped number 62 and sent the country into a frenzy. Even Maris' family was there and cheering.
Unfortunately, this memory will forever be tainted by the admission of McGwire's steroid use during that time period. Many Cardinals fans still find it to be a painful memory that they would just assume be rid of. The vast majority of fans, however, embrace the fun and excitement that season brought, and look on it as a great moment in Cardinals history. For sure it was among the top moments in baseball history, steroids be damned.
