The defense was the catalyst for the Gamecocks. South Carolina's pass rush was one the best in the country. Devin Taylor and Jadeveon Clowney can put the heat on the opposing quarterbacks. They combined for 14 sacks in 2011.Both defensive tackles have to replaced and star cornerback Stephon Gilmore is in the NFL. On offense South Carolina hopes running back Marcus Lattimore can return healthy he gained 818 yards last season. Quarterback Connor Shaw completed 65 percent of his passes for 1448 yards and 14 touchdowns and he gained 525 yards rushing. This team has the potential to be Steve Spurrier's best team at South Carolina. The defense will be fine but the offense has to come through. Shaw struggled at times passing the ball last year and Lattimore is a question mark for 2012. Losing leading receiver Alshon Jeffery is a big loss and must be replaced. Some new playmakers must be found for South Carolina to win the SEC East.

Recap OF The 2011 Gamecocks Football Season

The South Carolina Gamecocks of the SEC finished the 2011 season with a stellar 11-2 record, and completed the year with an easy victory against then #20 Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl. South Carolina ended the season in second place in the SEC's East Division, posting a 6-2 record in the conference. South Carolina's 2011 Highlights included a scintillating 45-42 shootout win over Georgia, a November 17 victory against Florida, and a mauling of then #17 Clemson in the regular season finale.
Among the key returning players for the Gamecocks are quarterback Connor Shaw, running back Marcus Lattimore, running back Brandon Wilds, wide receiver Ace Sanders, tight end Justice Cunningham, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, defensive end Devin Taylor, defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles, linebacker Shaq Wilson, defensive back D.J. Swearinger and defensive back DeVonte Holloman.
South Carolina has several quality recruits joining the team this coming season, including wide receiver Shaq Roland (South Carolina), running back Mike Davis (Georgia), safety Chaz Elder (Georgia), offensive tackle Brock Stadnik (North Carolina) and wide receiver Jody Fuller (North Carolina).
