Will Young Talent Help The Seattle Mariners?
Last year, the Seattle Mariners came in last place in the AL West with a record of just 69-95. The good news is that they should win more games this season. This club has some young talent that will help turn the team around in 2012. Although he only batted .272 last season, Ichiro Suzuki (RF) has a lifetime batting average of .325. The Mariners hope that he can provide some more hits in 2012. Jesus Montero (DH) comes over from the Yankees. He only played a handful of games last year, but his .328 batting average shows that the 22-year-old can hit. Justin Smoak (1B) should provide some much needed power for the club. Pitching should be decent for the Mariners this year. Felix Hernandez had an ERA of 3.47 with 222 strikeouts in 2011. King Felix will be the ace again this year. If Justin Vargas, Kevin Millwood, and the rest of the starters pitch well, then the Mariners could surprise a lot of teams. Led by the great Ichiro Suzuki, the Seattle Mariners have a solid group of young players. The Mariners will be fun to watch this season if the club can provide some run support when their pitchers are throwing well.
Seattle Mariners - The Best Moments
The Seattle Mariners haven't been around for that long. In fact, they didn't join the American League until 1977, but they've still had memorable moments and great players a plenty. These are some of the best moments in the history of the franchise:
April 8th of 1977 saw the Mariners winning the first game in the history of the franchise by beating the California Angels with a score of seven to six. Seattle takes the game by scoring two runs during the bottom of the 9th. Larry Milbourne hits a double and drives in the winning run. The winning pitcher is Bill Laxton.
June of 1990 - Randy Johnson is the pitcher of this game for the first no hitter in the history of the franchise. They beat the Detroit Tigers with a score of two to zero. Randy strikes out eight batters during this game.
October of 1991 sees Seattle beating the Chicago White Sox with a score of six to four for the 82nd win. This win seals the first winning season in the history of the franchise. The winning pitcher is Calvin Jones.
April of 1993 sees Chris Bosio pitching the second no hitter game in the history of the Mariners when he beats the Boston Red Sox with a score of seven to zero. Bosio retires 27 batters in a row after walking the first two.
In October of 1995, the Seattle Mariners beat the California Angels with a score of nine to one in a single game playoff for the win of their first division title. The previous September, the Mariners were a full six games from first place. The team wins the next 15 of 20 games, tying them with Angles for first. Randy Johnson hits a complete game and manages to strike 12 batters out during this game.
In October of 1995, The Seattle Mariners come back from losing the first two American League Division Series games, Seattle rallies to win the next three games for the series win. The Yankees took a one run lead at the top of the 11th inning, but the Mariners come back in the bottom of the inning for the game. Edgar Martinez hits a double, driving in Ken Griffey JR and Joey Cora.
September of 1997 - This is when the Mariners beat the California Angles with a score of four to three - allowing them to take their second title of the division in three years. Seattle scores four runs during the first inning, while Randy Johnson pitches eight great innings.
October of 2000 - The Mariners beat the Chicago White Sox with a score of two to one to take the American League Division Series and move up to the Championship series. Carlos Guillen hits a bunt single during the bottom of the ninth. The winning run goes to Rickey Henderson.
