Great Moments in San Diego Padres History1984- No National League team had ever come back from two games in arrears, and this fact must have weighed heavily on everyone's mind during the long flight back to San Diego. But the Padres did it, they came back in the ninth inning of game 5 off a Steve Garvey Home run into the right centerfield bleachers. The triumphant Padres faced the Detroit Padres for their first World series title, but lost to the Tigers 4 games to 1. |

San Diego Padres Make Big Changes
After an offseason full of new acquisitions, the San Diego Padres seem to be reloading in 2012. The Padres look to make some noise with their young prospects and they will likely have a bright future. The Padres traded for slugger Yonder Alonso (1B), an excellent young player from the Reds who probably would have been playing last year if it was not for Joey Votto. Alonso batted .330 with 5 homeruns in only 88 attempts in 2011. Chase Headley (3B) returns this season after batting .289 a year ago. The young Padres lineup hopes to score some runs in a ballpark that is notorious for being a "pitcher's park."The Padres traded Mat Latos (SP) when they acquired Alonso, but they should still have some solid pitching in 2012. Anthony Bass and Cory Luebke return to the starting rotation after having successful seasons last year. The Padres also acquired Edinson Volquez from the Reds. Volquez has the potential to be a great starting pitcher if he can find consistency in locating his pitches. He should be more confident pitching in Petco Park. If the San Diego Padres can develop some of their young prospects, then they will have some success in the NL West. No matter what happens this season, the Padres have players that will be fun to watch for years to come.
Finest Moments in San Diego Padres History
The San Diego Padres have certainly had moments to remember over their long history. Despite playoff frustrations throughout their time in the league, the Padres have plenty to be prideful of. It takes a bit of tough skin to be a Padres fan, but not because of a lack of excitement. Here are some of the most memorable moments in Padres history: 1978 and the All-Star Game. Dave Winfield was the only Padre on the team, but the Padres got to host the All-Star game for the first time. This also marked the first season that the Pads managed to muster a winning record since starting in the league. The All Star Game was a great one so that did not hurt matters at all. The Padres kind of began to fit in after this season. Petco Park Opens for Business. Back in 2004, the Padres were working hard to change things around. This went for the lineup and the talent as well as the surroundings and Petco Park opening was a shot in the arm. This incredible ball park seemed to energize the franchise as they began winning pretty regular. The momentum would not be enough to take them to World Series glory, but it was enough to get the profits going and make the Padres a team to notice. Trevor Huffman breaks the record. The all-time saves record always seemed like it was one of those untouchable records in baseball. Trevor Huffman proved that durability and talent can overcome any record. In 2006 he went out and took over the record for his beloved Padres, and the town has hung their hats on it ever since. Trevor Huffman was the Padres bullpen for over a decade and he will always be a favorite among fans. The Sweep in Los Angeles. In the 1996 season, the Padres had managed to put themselves into position to win the NL West for the first time in over a decade. The only catch was they had to go to Dodger stadium and sweep the first place Dodgers. Thanks to a hot hitting team and some great Padre luck, they pulled off the feat and won a NL West title. Hall of Fame comes calling for Dave Winfield. Dave Winfield went into the Hall of Fame the second he was eligible and all the Padre fans were celebrating. Despite playing with other teams he went into the Hall as a Padre. That was a source of pride for the Pad faithful. 1984 and 1998 World Series Visits. Though both seasons were unique, each of the Padres only two trips to the World Series were special. The NL series in 1984 was against the Chicago Cubs and Tony Gwynn's funky double sent them to the World Series. In 1998 it was a tough road to hoe as well against a tough Atlanta Braves squad. Unfortunately, both World Series ended in losses, but the Padres are determined to get back again.
