The team finished first in the National League East Division but lost in the National Division series to the eventual World Series Champs the St. Louis Cardinals. The team is red hot again this year and expected to win the division but they need to do more then just win the division to satisfy club manager Chalie Manuel. The team has solid hitting from Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins and Hunter Pierce with over 200 runs batten in between them. The hitting of the Phillies is awesome, and the team brings back most everyone from last season starting with superstar Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee plus Antonio Bastardo, Joe Blanton Jose Contreras, Jacob Diekman, Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, Jonathan Papelbon, Chad Qualls, Raul Valdes and Vance Worley. The pitching for the Phillies has been the strong point so far this year. Philadelphia Phillies are stacked for offense this year.
The Philadelphia Phillies will have another strong team in 2012. In fact, this team is still stacked with players. They may not win quite as many games as they did in 2011, but with their dominant pitching and dangerous lineup, they will likely still be playing in October. Ryan Howard (1B) and Chase Utley (2B) are starting the season on the injured list, but the Phillies will still have plenty of power without them. Placido Polanco (3B), Carlos Ruiz (C), Shane Victorino (CF), Hunter Pence (RF) and Jimmy Rollins (SS) are all proven hitters. In 2011, Ruiz batted .283 and Pence batted .314. This lineup should provide a lot of runs, and once Howard and Utley return, the Phillies will have one of the most powerful lineups in the league. Philadelphia also has one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball. They did lose Roy Oswalt, but the team still has Cole Hamels, Roy Halladay, and Cliff Lee. In 2011, all three of these pitchers had an ERA of less than 2.79, and combined for a total of 652 strikeouts. Jonathan Papelbon is the new closer and he had 31 saves for the Red Sox last season. It will be difficult to compete with the Phillies this year, as they have some of the best hitters and pitchers in the game. The Phillies hope to contend for a World Series title.
