The team has excellent hitting behind Josh Willingham and former Chicago Cubs designated hitter Hideki Matsui. The American League is the only place where you can have a DH. The team brings back some quality pitchers in Grant Balfour and Brian Fuentas and Jerry Blevins, Andrew Carignan, veteran Bartolo Colon, Ryan Cook, Pedro Figueroa, Brian Fuentes, Brandon McCart relief pitchers Tommy Milone. The team has some memorable years but one that is in the record books was the year 1989 when the bay area suffered one of the worst earthquakes in California history. The team battled back and won the ALCS championship in heroic fashion sweeping the Blue Jays to advance to the World Series. They did not win it but the fans and the city rallied around the team when the citizens needed it the most. The Oakland A's have been far from futile in there baseball history winning some 9 World Series match-ups and 15 NL Pennants. The A's are expected to do very well so take a trip to the ballpark today. |

Will The Oakland Athletics Improve on 2011?
The Oakland Athletics won only 74 games, and they hope to start rebuilding a solid team this year. It seems that the A's will rely on young players who will need to develop quickly if the team wants to have any success this season. The A's hitting may be an issue in 2012. Oakland plays in a huge park, and the team may have trouble scoring runs. But Jemile Weeks (2B) did bat .303 last season in 97 games. The young second-baseman will get his first full season this year. The Athletics also picked up Yoenis Cespedes (CF) from Cuba and they hop he can provide some runs in his first season in the United States. The pitching staff will need to play tough if the A's want to compete. The A's acquired Bartolo Colon from the Yankees. The veteran pitcher will provide some much needed experience to this young ball club. Brandon McCarthy and Tommy Milone will also be in the starting rotation. McCarthy had an ERA of 3.32 for the A's last season, while Milone had an ERA of 3.81.The Oakland Athletics may have trouble competing with the Angels and Rangers this year. But, the A's have some new, young faces that could make them exciting to watch for years to come.
Rickey Henderson, Catfish Hunter among the greatest memories in Oakland A's History
The Oakland A's have always been a prideful team and they have been connected with the Oakland area since the 1968 season. They had a long and storied past prior to 1968 in Philadelphia and Kansas City, but this article focuses on memories from their Oakland days only. After forty plus seasons, the A's have plenty of great moments to choose from. Here are the best moments in Oakland A's history: In May of 1968, Catfish Hunter lit up the Minnesota Twins with a perfect game in which he also dominated at the plate. Not only did Catfish throw a perfect game, he also drove in three runs to beat Minnesota all by himself. Not many performances by pitchers are better than this one. In 1971, The A's win the first of five straight divisional titles when the A's beat the Chicago White Sox. They would dominate the American League West for years after this. Catfish Hunter then went on to dominate the Cincinnati Reds in winning game seven of the 1972 World Series. It would mark the first World Series Title for Oakland and guaranteed their place in history. It would be a recurring theme in the early to mid-seventies. In 1973, The New York Mets proved to be another victim in the A's drive for dominance. Though they stretched the A's to seven games as well, Ken Holtzman, Bert Campaneris and Reggie Jackson were simply too much. The A's were working towards becoming a legitimate dynasty.
1974 marked three World Series Championships in a row as the A's took out the Los Angeles Dodgers. This series, however, was not really close. The A's won it by a count of four games to one. The A's would officially be a dynasty from that point on. Most teams would pale in comparison even though it would now be almost twenty years before they would do it again.
By the early eighties, the A's were struggling to win. Then in 1981 the A's decided enough was enough and whipped the Kansas City Royals to get back to the playoffs. It was the first time they had made waves since their earlier dynasty.
1982 marked the season that Rickey Henderson finally beat Lou Brock's steals record. This was a huge deal in 1982 and it is a huge deal even today. Henderson finished with 130 on the season and it still sits on Major League Record Books as the best single season total of all time.
Jose Canseco was the greatest player on the planet back in 1988 and his incredible 40/40 season had never before been done. Even though we now know it was steroid powered, it is still and impressive feat in A's history. The A's would do even more important work in 1988 however. They also would return to the World Series and do so in style over the Boston Red Sox.Though 1988 ended in disappointment, nothing was going to stop the A's in 1989. Even an earthquake could not stop these guys. They swept the Giants and got their first title in decades.1991 saw Rickey Henderson break the all-time steals record as well. That moment will forever be a great A's memory. There have been some other great memories but not much success since the early nineties in the playoffs. The A's have won a little, but still look to return to the super powers that they were in the seventies.
