Nebraska took third place in the Big Ten's Legends Division, with a 5-3 conference record. Highlights of the 2011 campaign included big wins against Ohio State, then #11 Michigan State and then #12 Penn State. Among the key returning players for the Cornhuskers are quarterback Taylor Martinez, running back Rex Burkhead, wide receiver Kenny Bell, running back/kick returner Ameer Abdullah, kicker Brett Maher, linebacker Will Compton, safety Daimion Stafford and defensive end Cameron Meredith. Nebraska has several quality recruits joining the team this coming season, including linebacker Michael Rose (Missouri), offensive tackle Paul Thurston (Colorado), linebacker Jared Afalava (Utah), running back Imani Cross (Georgia) and defensive tackle Vincent Valentine (Illinois). The 2011 Cornhuskers Team

The Cornhuskers first season in the Big Ten was a season of inconsistency especially on defense. Nebraska gave up 48 points to Wisconsin and 45 to Michigan both losses and then held Michigan State to 3 and shut Ohio State down in the second half in victories. Nebraska's lack of athleticism in certain areas was exposed in the Capital One Bowl loss to South Carolina. There were few problems on offense as the duo of quarterback Taylor Martinez and running back Rex Burkhead led the Cornhusker attack. Martinez passed for 2,089 yards and 13 touchdowns and he also rushed for 874 yards and nine scores. Burkhead led Nebraska in rushing with 1,357 yards and scored 15 touchdowns.

Defense will be the key for Nebraska in 2012 seven starters return but they have to replace their three best defensive players defensive lineman Jared Crick, linebacker Lamonte David, and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard. If the Corhnuskers can improve the defense a little a Big Ten title game appearance is possible because there is plenty of offensive punch with Burkhead and Martinez.
