Minnesota Twins - No Where But Up
In 2011, the Minnesota Twins had a record of 63-99, the second worst in baseball. Major injuries kept the team from reaching their full potential and landed the Twins in last place in the AL Central. If the Twins can stay healthy in 2012, then they should be able to bounce back and have a solid season. Joe Mauer (C) was injured most of last season, but before his injury he was one of the best catchers in baseball. In 8 seasons with the Twins, Mauer has a career batting average of .322. His return will drastically help the team. Also injured last season was Justin Morneau (DH). Morneau played just 69 games last year, but if he stays healthy this season, he will add some pop to the Twins lineup. The Twins added Ryan Doumit (C) from the Pirates. Doumit hit .303 in 2011 and he will be able to give Morneau and Mauer some rest when they need it. The pitching staff will need to stay healthy also. Carl Pavano was the only Twins starting pitcher who did not end up on the DL in 2011. Pavano had an ERA of 4.30 last season. Nick Blackburn and Jason Marquis will also be in the starting rotation. Marquis had 20 starts for the Nationals in 2011 and he had an ERA of 3.95. Overall, if the Minnesota Twins stay healthy, they will be much improved from one year ago. Mauer and Morneau should be able to keep the Twins fighting near the top of the AL Central.
The Most Famous Moments of the Minnesota Twins History
The Minnesota Twins didn't become what they are until after the 1960 season. That's when the Washington Senators packed their bags and moved to the twin cities. This is where they became the Minnesota Twins. Since this change, the team has had many famous moments, but some stand out more than others. Here is a list:
April of 1961 is when the Twins beat the New York Yankees with a score of six to zero in the team's first game with their new name. Pedro Ramos pitched a complete game, with a shut out for game win. Reno Bertoia and Bobby Allison both hit homers.
September of 1965 saw the Twins beating the Washington Senators with a score of two to one to take the Pennant for the American League. During this game, Jim Kaat pitched a complete game, with a shut out and struck ten batters out.
In September four years later, the Twins win the Western Division title for the American league when they beat the Kansas City Royals with a score of four to three. The winning pitcher is Bob Miller and this is the game where Harmon Killerbrew hits is 47th homer.
The next September, the Twins win the second division title in a row when they beat the Oakland A's with a score of seven to four. Bill Zepp gets the save for the team and Tom Hall is the pitcher for the win.
In September of 1987, Minnesota wins the first title for the division since 1970 when they beat the Rangers with a score of five to three. Jeff Reardon saves this game for his 31st of the '87 season.
October of 1987 sees the Twins winning their very first World Series in a seven game run when they beat the St. Louis Cardinals. The deciding game is won with a score of four to two. Frank Viola pitched eight innings. This is the first World Championship for the Twins.
October of 1991 sees the Twins winning the second American League Pennant in the team's history by beating the Toronto Blue Jays in the Championship Series. The win was four games to one. The deciding game was game five with a score of eight to five. The game was tied at five during inning 8, but Twins score three runs, taking the lead.
In October of 1991, the Twins win the second World Championship of the team's history when the beat the Atlanta Braves in a seven game matchup. The Twins take the seventh game with a score of one to zero and ten innings. Jack Morris pitches a complete game to take the win. It is the bottom of the 10th when the Twins win, thanks to Gene Larkin hitting a single, bringing Dan Gladden in with the run for the win.
October 6th of 2002 sees the Minnesota Twins beating the Oakland A's in the American League Division Series winning three games to two. In the winning game, the Twins score three during the top of the 9th and hold the A's off during the bottom of the inning for the win. The winning pitcher is Brad Radke. This win takes the Twins to the Championship Series.
