Team Gophers: A Team Under Review In 2011
The Golden Gophers struggled through a tough season in 2011. Head Coach Jerry Kill had health problems throughout the season and on the field Minnesota just did not have enough talent to be successful. They lost to North Dakota State and perennial doormat New Mexico State. The bright spot for the Gophers was quarterback Marqueis Gray. Gray moved back to quarterback from wide receiver and led Minnesota in rushing with 966 yards and 6 scores. Gray threw for 1,495 yards and 8 touchdowns. He has to improve on his accuracy as he completed only 50 percent of his passes.
Overall Minnesota had the worst offense in the Big Ten. On defense the Gophers could not stop anybody they gave up 40 or more points four times in Big Ten play and could not pressure the opponents into turning the ball over.
The bad news for Minnesota is that they have to replace 11 starters including 6 on defense. The Gophers hit the JUCO ranks had in recruiting especially on defense. This is a long term rebuilding job and Jerry Kill is a proven winner. He will need time to rebuild the program. Sadly, the biggest obstacle to the Golden Gopher rebuilding project is the health of Jerry Kill. Another dismal season is in the offering for Minnesota.
