Illinois 2011 Season Review
The University of Illinois started the 2011 season at 6-0 and was considered a serious contender for the Big Title but a close loss to Ohio State sent the Illini into a tailspin where they lost six in a row and cost Head Coach Ron Zook his job. The offense struggled during the losing streak and averaged only 11 points a game. A bright spot on offense was returning quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase he was responsible for over 2,700 yards in total offense and 21 touchdowns. The defense was solid for most of the season.
New coach Tim Beckman comes from Toledo and inherits a solid team with 15 returning starters. He is known for his wide open offense and Scheelhaase is the perfect quarterback for his style of play. On defense, LB Johnathan Brown will lead the way along with defensive lineman Michael Buchanan and Akeem Spence. By no means is the cupboard bare for Beckman. There are some areas that need to be shored up on the offensive line, wide receiver, and running back. If they can find players to fill these spots a good bowl game is not out of the question.
