The Illinois Fighting Illini of the Big Ten finished the 2011 season with a 7-6 record, completing the year in style by beating UCLA 20-14 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. Illinois ended the season in fifth place in the Big Ten's Leaders Division, posting a 2-6 record in the conference. The Illini got off to a red-hot 5-0 start to begin the year, including a victory over then #22 Arizona State.
Among the key returning players for the Illini are quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase, running back Donovonn Young, punter Justin DuVernois, linebacker Jonathan Brown, defensive lineman Akeem Spence, defensive lineman Michael Buchanan and defensive back Terry Hawthorne.
