Minute Maid Park
The Astros play 81 games at their home field Minute Maid Park. The stadium is located in downtown Texas and it has been open for 12 seasons. The ballpark holds about 41,000 and is located at 501 Crawford Street. The park is close to shopping, hotels and mass transit including Union Station. This makes it easy for fans and tourists to see a game and make a day of it. The stadium has new score board as of 2012 and it is large and viewable from any area of the ballpark. The screen keeps fans abreast of other MLB games and includes replays and a variety of fan interaction activities. This stadium is very hitter friendly down the left field line, with a distance of only 315 feet. With the advent of concerts at baseball stadiums, some performers have recently held concerts here and with great weather, this will sure continue.
2011 Houston Astros look to the future.
After achieving little success in recent history, the Houston Astros look to bounce back in 2012. The club has many young players that make them a sleeper team in the NL Central Division. The Astros will rely heavily on their top hitter Carlos Lee (1B), who batted .291 with 18 homeruns last season to lead the team. He also led the team in RBI (94) and hits (161).The Astros have a huge void to fill after trading Hunter Pence (RF) to the Phillies last season. Pence was an offensive powerhouse who batted .308 while with the Astros last season. Not including Lee, the relatively young infield composed of Jose Altuve (2B), Chris Johnson (3B), and Jed Lowrie have an average age of 25 years. Altuve is the youngest of the bunch at 22 years old. Altuve batted .309 last season, however, he only played 35 games. The Astros do have some veteran pitchers in their rotation. Wandy Rodriguez and Bud Norris each started at least 30 games last season and ended 2011 with an ERA of 3.49 and 3.95 respectively. The Astros also will mix in a young starter, Lucas Harrell (26 years old), who has only pitched in 17 games in his career. Overall, the Astros have a nice bunch of young hitters and fielders. But whether these young players will succeed in 2012 has yet to be decided. They also lack depth in their starting rotation and in their bullpen. Carlos Lee and the Astros hope to make some noise in 2012 and improve as a team.
Great Moments in Houston Astros History
The Houston Astros have had a number of awesome moments in their history, and most Astros fans would argue vehemently over which one was the best. That is how it is with most MLB teams and sports in general. The greatest moments are those that you will never forget, or that change the way you view the team in question. In no particular order, here are a number of great Astros' memories: The 2005 World Series. Yes, they did in fact make the World Series one time. They lost the series in a sweep, but the simple fact that they finally made the big stage was a huge step in the right direction. Hosting a World Series can do that for a city. The 2005 season was magical in every single way. The Houston Astros have yet to return to the World Series, but give them a little time. They seem to be building something with all those youngsters. The Roger Clemens Signing. Roger Clemens signing with the Astros was the biggest thing to happen to the Astros in a very long time. He instantly revitalized the pitching staff and brought popularity to the team that had not been around for years. The Houston Astros were suddenly contenders and with Roger on the mound, they were special. Every game that Roger pitched was a game the Astros should win. That type of confidence is what directly led them to make the World Series the next season. Roger might be having problems now, but back then he was the ultimate signing. Willy Taveras going off for a 30 game hit streak. This was out of nowhere and it helped the team catch fire with the fans again. Taveras had no business hitting for 30 games in a row, and that is what made it so exciting. When you have an average player do incredible things, it makes for a wonderful story. Of all the things on this list, this to me was just as memorable. It seemed to come from literally out of nowhere. Mike Scott throws a No-Hitter in must win fashion. Throwing a no-hitter is one thing, but throwing a no-hitter to clinch the NL West is something else entirely. This was among the greatest clutch pitching performances in baseball history. The Astros were on a roll in that game, and Scott was insanely good. To me, this is the ultimate moment in Astros history. It came at a time when the Astros desperately needed something great to happen, and Scott delivered that in spades. It was one of the most dominating pitching performances in baseball history. Jeff Kent's Home Run in the 2004 NLCS. It was game five and Jeff Kent strolled up to the plate and drilled a three run home run to end the game. This home run was one of the most exciting in National League playoff history and it was almost certainly Kent's best moment as a player. The play call is certainly iconic in Houston Astros history.
A Little More Astros History
The Houston Astros have one of the most storied histories in all of Major League Baseball. The team has seen its share of ups and downs for certain, but the record books show that they always seemed to be just short of championship material. Having only been to one World Series, the Astros are to this day working towards building that winner that can get them off the slide. Along the way, however, have been some very memorable moments for Astros fans. The Colt .45s. That was what they were called when they first came into the league in 1962. The Houston area really didn't care much one way or the other. They simply were happy to have major league baseball close to home. The Astros come calling...and the Astrodome too. In only three years, the Colt .45s was no more. The team was renamed the Astros and they moved into a space age looking stadium called the Astrodome. Nobody had seen anything like it and the Astros became popular because of it. The team played their games in a dome that looked like it didn't even belong on Earth. In 1966 Astroturf was introduced. Not long after, the Astroturf was revealed to the world as the "latest artificial grass" invention. This turf was nowhere near as soft as grass and became noted for its speed when the ball skipped off it. Over time it was adjusted and tweaked until it matched the artificial turf found throughout the game today. J.R. Richard Arrives in 1971. Marked the season that Richard came to the Houston Astros and he was immediately a huge fan favorite. The guy was imposing standing at 6'8" tall and could hurl the ball like few others. Richard would be the Astros primary Ace for years. A winning season, strike or notIn 1972 the Astros finally had a winning season. Though it was a strike shortened year, the Astros found their way to 84 wins behind Cesar Cedeno, Lee May and others. Lite Brite Uniforms! The Astros have never been shy about being innovators, and the uniforms they brought out for the 1975 season certainly qualified. These red, yellow, blue striped uniforms were striped on top and bottom, and were the talk of baseball and the fashion world for a time. Nolan Ryan Arrives to the team. In 1979, the most popular Houston Astro of all time (arguably) arrived in town. Nolan Ryan, to that point having already thrown four no-hitters, arrived in Texas to much hubbub. The Playoffs! In 1980, the Astros would harness all their potential and make a run that would take them all the way to the National League Championship Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. They ultimately would lose the eventual champions, but the success in the playoffs was huge for Texas area baseball. 1986 and small ball starts. Hal Lanier had been a protégée of Whitey Herzog and brought Whiteyball to Houston. This version of using small ball to advance runners and great pitching to keep scores low was successful in Houston right away. They moved to the greatest league championship series in history against the New York Mets. Though they lost the series in six games, the series was drama throughout. The Astros made a wonderful showing. Minute Maid Park Opens. In 2000 the incredible Minute Maid Park opens to MLB play. The Astros moved away from their beloved home and moved into a great new stadium full of character and excitement. The name has changed a few times, but the stadium is divine. Finally a World Series comes to town. Against all odds, the 2005 Houston Astros made it to the World Series. It took a very long time, but finally they had made it. They took the field against the Chicago White Sox but eventually lost the Series. Astros fans wanted the win, of course, but just getting there was a bit of a relief after all those years. A Big Move in Houston. It has been announced that in 2013 the Astros will move over to the American League West after terms of the sale of the team to Jim Crane demanded it. It will be very odd watching the Astros play in the American League after so many years in the National, but perhaps it will give them a fresh start. In 2013 they will move to American League West due to sale of team to Jim Crane.
