Comerica Park
Comerica Park is the home field for the Detroit Tigers and it's located in the downtown area off of woodward avenue. The stadium replaced the old Tiger Stadium and holds just over 41,000. Their is a Ferris wheel where guests can enjoy view from above inside the park and a carousel down the right field line where children can ride on plastic tigers. The stadium is very fan friendly and have fireworks on Fridays and Saturdays, if games are played. The stadium also has excellent food and indoor club section as well. Check out one of the newest ball parks in the major leagues today.
Detroit Tigers Starting Off in First
After earning first place in the AL Central in 2011, the Detroit Tigers added even more talent to their roster in the offseason. Detroit won big when they signed Prince Fielder (1B), and they should make the playoffs with relative ease. Fielder is one of the most feared hitters in the game, and he will add even more pop to the Tigers lineup. He batted .299 with 38 homeruns for the Brewers in 2011. Miguel Cabrera (3B) returns to the Tigers lineup after hitting a remarkable .344 last season. Jhonny Peralta (SS) and Austin Jackson (CF) will also be solid in the batting order. Detroit also has one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball in Justin Verlander. Verlander won 24 games in 2011 and had an ERA of 2.40 with 250 strikeouts. He will be the team's ace again this season. The Tigers also have some good young pitchers in 23-year-old Rick Porcello and 22-year-old rookie Drew Smyly. Both of these pitchers have great potential, and if they pitch well for the Tigers this season, then the rest of the AL Central teams are in serious trouble. The Tigers are the favorite to win their division. If their young pitchers have good seasons, then they have the ability to make a run deep into the playoffs. Even if they do not pitch well, Fielder and Cabrera can make up for it.
The Detroit Tigers - Their Best Moments
The Detroit Tigers have been in the American League since 1901. In that time, they have racked up their share of great moments. The list is long, so narrowing it down can be pretty tough for most fans, but here are some of the best:
In April of 1901, the Tigers beat the Milwaukee Brewers with a score of 14 to 13. It was their very first game and win. Detroit was trailing 13 to four headed into the ninth inning, but they rallied and scored 10 runs and won the game. Frank Dillon hit a double and was able to bring in the tying and winning runs.
October of 1907 saw the Tigers beating the St. Louis Brows with a score of 10 to two, allowing them to win their very first American League Pennant. This is the first of three American League Pennants the Tigers win consecutively.
It wasn't until September of 1934 that the Tigers surprise fan by winning the American League Pennant. They win the pennant by beating St. Louis Browns with a score of two to one during game two of a double header.
In October of 1935, Detroit wins the first World Championship in the history of the franchise. They beat the Chicago Cubs in six games and take the Series. The decisive game saw Goose Goslin hit a single and bring Mickey Cochrane home during the bottom of the ninth for the game and series win. Tommy Bridges pitched the complete game.
In September of 1940, the Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians with a score of two to zero to take the sixth American League Pennant.
October of 1945 was the time that the Tigers again defeated the Chicago Cubs, allowing them to win the second Championship in their history. They beat the Cubs with a score of nine to three during the seventh World Series game. Hal Newhouser pitched the complete game, striking out and clinching the win.
On October 10th of 1968, the Tigers took the third World Championship in the history of the franchise. They beat St. Louis Cardinals during seven games for the Series. In the seventh game, Mickey Lolich pitched a complete game for his third win during the series. In the 7th inning, Jim Northrup hits a triple.
In May of 1984, Detroit beats the California Angles with a score of fie to won for 35 wins that season. The 35 and 5 record they set is still the best 40 game start in the history of the major league. Jack Morris pitched the complete game, claiming his 9th win for the season.
October of the same year saw the Tigers winning the fourth World Series in the history of the team by beating the San Diego Padres with four games to one in the Series. The decisive game saw Kirk Gibson hitting a three run homer in the 8th inning, putting the game away for the Tigers.
In October of 2006, Detroit beats the Oakland A's in the American League championships and clinches the win of the pennant. The tigers claim the win for the game, as well as the series when Magglio Ordonez manages to hit a walk off homer in the bottom of the 9th.
