2011 Colorado Rockies Looking to Bounce Back
The Colorado Rockies won only 73 games in 2011 and they are looking to bounce back in 2012 with and improved team. With some solid hitting, the Rockies hope to compete in their division. Carlos Gonzalez (LF) returns as the team's best hitter. Gonzalez has a lifetime batting average of .298 and hit 26 homers last season. Also returning to the team is Troy Tulowitzki (SS), who batted .302 last year. The Rockies added Michael Cuddyer (RF) from the Twins. Cuddyer hit 20 homeruns in 2011, but he should be able to belt a few more this season since he will now play half of his games at Coors Field. The Rockies will be able to score runs by the bunches this season. The Rockies weak point is their pitching. One of their best pitchers is Jamie Moyer, who will turn 50 in November. Moyer was successful in 2011, and the Rockies are hoping he still has some gas left in the tank. Juan Nicasio and Jeremy Guthrie are also in the starting rotation. Nicasio had a better ERA of the two last year, but it was a subpar 4.14.The Rockies will try to outhit teams in Coors Field this season. They may have the power in their lineup to do just that. They will need their pitchers to step up and play better than they did last season if they are going to compete in the NL West.
From Mile High to Coors Field - Colorado Rockies Moments to Remember
The Colorado Rockies might be one of the youngest baseball franchises, but they have made the most of their time in the big leagues. The Rockies are a team that started making memories from the very first season they played and kept right on wowing fans from that day forward. Though they have certainly suffered through some tough times, the Rockies are still a franchise to be reckoned with. Here are some of the best moments from their history: A Fantastic Start. During the Rockies first season of play during 1993, the Rockies actually played their games in Mile High Stadium. The stadium didn't stop the Rockies from loading the fans up, however. The team brought millions through the stalls to see baseball action among the mountains. The team was no pushover either. They won more games during that season than any other expansion team ever had in their first season. It was a milestone that Rockies fans could be proud of. The First Game Explosion. The very first regular season hitter was Eric Young and he hit...you guessed it...a home run. That first game was a blowout win by the Rockies and it was a sign of things to come with the home runs. Coors Field Opens Up. As fun as it was to play in Mile High Stadium, the Rockies wanted their own park with all of baseball's amenities. Coors Field opened up in style with a game for the ages. The Rockies played the Mets and beat them in extra innings on a walk-off homer by Dante Bichette. It was the first of many dramatic home runs in Coors Field. The 2009 season. New manager Jim Tracy was on the scene and he led the Rockies to an incredible regular season record and NL Wild Card berth. They won 92 games but lost to Philadelphia Phillies in the first round. The Phillies went on to win it all. Though the Rockies lost quick in the playoffs, they still showed that they would be a team to be reckoned with. The Rockies find a pitcher. Not known for their pitching most seasons, Ubaldo Jiminez changed all that in 2010. Not only did he start for the NL Allstars, but he also threw a no-no against the Braves in April. The game was so dominant that the Braves did not seem to know what hit them. It is one of the greatest games I personally have ever witnessed. The Rockies Make the Playoffs in 1995. Though they were swept in the first round by the Atlanta Braves, this was the beginning of great things for the Rockies. This team was one of the quickest winners in expansion baseball history. The 2007 Season. First of all, the Rockies had no business being in the playoffs at all. They were way behind and had to work their way to a 20-8 record the last month to get in a play-in game for the wild card. The Padres did not go quietly in Coors field as the game would be the ultimate classic in the new stadium to date. The Rockies did win it eventually after extra innings and a three run comeback in the final inning. What made it incredible was that it came against Trevor Hoffman. The Rockies were not done, however. Next up they swept the Phillies in the first round with a dominating performance. Next up was the Arizona Diamondbacks and they were swept as well. This sent the Rockies to the first World Series in franchise history and the city into a major frenzy. They ended up losing in a sweep to the Boston Red Sox, but the season will be remembered as the greatest so far. There is more to come from this great franchise.
