Alaska Anchorage Seawolves
Alaska Anchorage Seawolves is the major college sports team located in Alaska. With some sports being in Division I level and some in Division II level of the NCAA guidelines, so to speak; their eleven (11) sponsored sports are mostly unknown to many given the location of the school. This is changing as the teams have improved as of late. Gymnastic and hockey are in Division I level and Division II level for men's and women's basketball and volleyball, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's outdoor track and field. Very recently, the Seawolves' men's and women's basketball teams were ranked number nine (9) in the US. Being ranked in the top ten (10) out of three hundred (300) is really something of an achievement. "Seawolves" - Ferocious in discipline is their motto and other school's are starting to take notice.
The 30-win season of the women's basketball though has come to an end as Ashland Ohio defeated the Seawolves, its 30-win season is a school record. Though the Seawolves may have lost in the NCAA quarterfinals Division II tournament this last season, they look to improve and take the division. Johansson, the 6-foot-2 center had always been one of the UAA's best players and very recently earned the All-American honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Her counterparts, Kari Daugherty of Ashland and Jena Stutzman and Lindsay Tenyak of the Eagles were also All-Americans. The talent level is rising none the less so come out a see a game this season.
