Intercollegiate athletic teams at the University of Akron are called the Zips, and they compete at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for college football. Akron zips compete against other major college schools throughout the country. Sports that are included for men are track and field, soccer, baseball, rifle, basketball, golf and cross country. For women include volleyball, basketball, and track and field, cross country, tennis, golf, swimming and diving, rifle and soccer. How it got its name "Zips" was through a contest. Students, faculty and alumni submitted their suggested names and which one will be chosen will win a prize. The contest has finally gotten a winner. An entry named "zippers" of a freshman student, Margaret Hamlin won and she got the prize of $10.
Later on it was shortened by its athletic director, Kenneth Cochrane and officially it became Zips in the 1950. Zips is represented by a female Kangaroo which explains their official logo. Just like any other intercollegiate teams that play for the NCAA, compete for the National Championship. Football major rivalries of Akron are with Kent State University and Youngstown State University. In 2009, Akron Zips Men's soccer team ranked number one throughout the 2009 regular season. Why don't you take a peek at their upcoming games thru June 22, on track and field (an Olympic trials) which will be at the Eugene, Oregon (at the University of Oregon).
